What can you use a microwave for?

Although you'll find a microwave in almost every kitchen, it may be a very underrated appliance. In many kitchens, the microwave is only used to heat up something when it offers so much more. Any foods that could be cooked by steaming, poaching or boiling can also be prepared with the microwave. Cooking in a microwave may sound a bit unusual, but at those busy moments when you have no additional capacity on your stove, the microwave is a good backup. In addition, cooking in a microwave is a healthy choice, because you don’t need to use oil and the nutrients can be better preserved.

A microwave is also commonly used for defrosting. Small dishes, meat, fish or liquids can be thawed well with the special defrost programmes. It’s important to defrost in small portions and to stir or turn regularly. This prevents the outside from being cooked while the inside is still frozen.

Of course, the microwave is also ideal for keeping food warm before serving it. For example, soup is always best when served as warm as possible.

What are the advantages of a microwave?

  • easy operation
  • quick preparation
  • takes up little space
  • healthy way of cooking because no oil is needed and vitamins are retained
  • versatile and can be used for warming, defrosting, boiling, poaching and steaming

What should you consider when buying a microwave?

Think about what you are going to use the microwave for. This way you can estimate the capacity you may need. In a microwave with a capacity of 30 litres, an extra ceramic plate can be placed. This creates an additional second level, so you can heat two plates simultaneously. Also look at the diameter of the plates you often use so you know if they will fit.

The power of the microwave indicates how fast it can heat up a meal. This is shown in wattage, for example, 900W or 1800W. If you like to work with preset programmes, then you can also look at these. This varies from a few to dozens of programmes with which you can easily start the right cooking method. Maxima microwaves all have a glass door and lighting on the inside so you can always keep an eye on your food.

How do I clean a microwave?

A microwave is the easiest to clean if you do it regularly, because you then encounter less baked-on residue. First, let the appliance cool down and wipe the inside with a damp cloth. Is there stubborn food residue on the inside? Put a bowl of water (possibly with a few tablespoons of vinegar) in the microwave and let it heat up for about five minutes on the highest setting. The steam will loosen the residue, leaving you needing only a damp cloth to clean it. Don't forget to clean the turntable and the inside of the door as well. Wipe down the outside of microwave with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

What can't you use a microwave for?

There are a few rules to keep in mind for the safe use of your microwave. Always make sure that the heat can escape. This applies to both the food you are heating and the cookware you place the food in. For example, eggs and fresh fruit can burst and water can become steam that causes burns. The dishes, jars and containers you microwave the food in must be microwave safe and never sealed with a lid. Always leave a corner open or a crack free to let the heat escape. It’s also important to never place aluminium foil and metal objects inside as they can spark. This includes stainless steel cutlery or stainless steel GN containers. Be aware that microwaving paper can cause a fire.
