Tray sealers are a vital component in many catering businesses. Food waste is something everyone tries to avoid. Rather use a professional packaging solution to store your food in a way that it lasts longer. Tray sealers are ideal for caterers and delivery services who want to seal their dishes and offer the freshest meals.

What is a tray sealer machine?

A tray sealer, also known as a top sealer, is a tabletop packaging machine that can be used to pack preformed dishes and containers airtight to prevent them from leaking.

How does a tray sealer work?

Before you start you need the following:

  • A mould in the shape and size of the tray you want to seal
  • Heat-resistant sealing foil
  • Plastic or cardboard trays

Choose the shape of the tray you want to seal and place the appropriate mould on the machine. Turn on the tray sealer and set the desired temperature. Once it's warmed up, place a food-filled dish (or tray) in the mould.

Pull the foil over it and press down the lid of the tray sealer. After a maximum of five seconds, the sealing process is complete and you can open the lid again and take the dish out. Each compartment of the tray or container is now completely leak-proof.

By using a heating plate, the foil is sealed only on the closing edges of the bowls. Thanks to the special sealing mechanism, you can obtain a large sealing pressure with light pressure. This makes the tray sealer fast and easy to operate.

Which foods can benefit from using a tray sealer?

You can seal almost all food and dishes. This allows you to store them more easily.

Examples include:

  • dairy products
  • vegetables and fruit
  • raw and cooked meat
  • fish and seafood
  • ready-made meal boxes
  • rice and dough products

What should you look for when buying a tray sealer?

Maxima has tray sealers in different sizes. You should consider the dimensions of the trays you want to use as not every tray fits in every machine.

It’s also important to always place a tray sealer on a flat and stable surface. Also, do not put the tray sealer close to a heat source such as a stove, oven or heater. For easy operation and sufficient ventilation, it's best to keep at least 10cm free around the device.

Always use the correct moulds as only these will fit perfectly and ensure that your dish can be sealed properly.

It’s important to know that airtight packing with this packaging machine is not the same as vacuum packing. A tray sealer lets you seal a bowl or tray with a foil. This prevents leakage and prevents air from getting in from the outside.

With vacuum packing, you put food in a plastic bag and the air is sucked out of the bag by a vacuum machine that then immediately seals it airtight. A tray sealer is used in most cases for food that you only want to store or transport for a short time. Vacuum packaging is suitable for long-term storage freezing.
